Dry stonewalls are an important component of the landscape. While many dry stonewalls have been well maintained and remain effective stockproof barriers, others now need rebuilding.
We need to maintain the structure, landscape patterns and biodiversity of field boundaries through the restoration of dry stone walls. When a wall has collapsed or been damaged; the damaged section can be taken down to
ground level and rebuilt using the existing stone to tie in with the existing wall.
Our stonewall restoration follow the exact line and contours of original field boundaries and is built in accordance with the best standards, traditions and designs of the district. Rebuilt walls must not exceed the traditional height for such features in the locality (unless the agreement is obtained in writing).
Fencing along or on top of stonewalls may be permitted to help maintain the restored wall. Small gaps in dry stonewalls should be repaired as soon as they develop.
